McDonald’s: Are They Selling Meals or Happy? (Part 2)

Posted by mrlane on 10 May 2011

Last week I asked you to do this with me – Today I want you to work with the people around you to analyze a McDonald’s commercial…  :)
  • Writing Prompt

McDonald’s invests millions of dollars in advertising, and they target their advertising to a very specific group of people.  Analyze who they are trying to sell to, what they are trying to sell, and why they may use these ideas. Are they selling more than food?

  • Start by writing one or two essential questions based on the writing prompt and record the questions on your worksheet.
  • Watch the McDonald’s commercial below with the prompt and essential questions in mind.

You can also view the commercial here.

  • Research

What specific examples from the commercial make you think McDonald’s is selling to a certain group of people?

What specific examples make you think they are selling something other than food?

  • Write your thesis statement on your worksheet (answer the essential questions)
  • Use your thesis as your topic sentence, bring in your specific examples, and then explain in a paragraph, your answer to the writing prompt in the CTE #2 document we created earlier this trimester.
  • When done writing (and editing), copy and paste you’re response into the comment section of this blog post.

McDonald’s makes money with all the commercials and business that they make. McDonalds gives people interest to people by including the winter games in the commercial so people can by from McDonald’s. They’re trying to get people to watch the winter games and eat at McDonald’s too. With all this money and success McDonald’s has a chance to be the second best fast food restaurant ever because I like in and out better .

  12.   Kathryn Says:

McDonald’s is selling chicken nuggets with sweet chili sauce to Olympians and to a random person. McDonald’s is showing that anyone can eat at McDonald’s, so you can walk into a McDonalds and be as cool as an Olympian.

  13.   Robert Says:

McDonalds is selling to Olympic players because they want people to think you can eat healthy at McDonalds. Examples of this, is by showing Olympic players in the commercial that are healthy. An example that they are selling happiness is by showing happy people in the commercials. They are promoting chicken nuggets and spicy chili sauce in there commercials. Another example is by saying “You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, to eat like one.” Those are the reasons why I think McDonalds is selling to certain people and certain things.

  14.   William Says:

McDonald’s is selling to Olympic players because they want people to think that you don’t have to be an Olympian to eat or be like one. Examples are they promote chicken nuggets. Also, they promote spicy chicken sauce while the Olympians are eating both of them together. McDonalds shows some disabled or handicapped people being happy even though they can’t do certain things. One last example is the commercial even says “You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to eat like one.”

  15.   Keila Says:

McDonalds is trying to sell to athletes and fans of the Olympics. They are trying to sell their new “Sweet Chili Sauce”. They use disabled athletes to sell the food. They also try to sell their chicken nuggets, McDonalds does this by having the athletes eat the nuggets and have a smile on their face while doing so. McDonalds also tries to advertise the Olympics by talking about it.

  16.   oscar Says:

McDonalds is selling to Olympic athletes and people how watch the Olympics so that they think that healthy people eat at McDonalds. One way they show this is that they put Olympic athletes in the commercial. They are putting happy Olympics athletes eating at McDonalds. They are also promoting chicken nuggets and the new spacey sauce. At the end they say “you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to eat like one”. That is how they want you to eat at McDonald.

  17.   ryan Says:

I think McDonalds is selling more than food. They are promoting there new sweet chili sauce which isn’t food it’s sauce. They say that you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to eat like one. They say this because the sauce is so good that you are going to eat a lot of it on your food you buy there.

  18.   Armine Says:

McDonald’s is selling both meals and patriotism. Basically the main people McDonald’s is selling to in the commercial are athletes and the disabled. The commercial revolves around the Winter Olympics by showing the various types of sports presented in the Olympics. Besides that, the Olympics symbol is presented at the end of the commercial to promote the Olympic Games. As seen in the commercial, McDonald’s is selling chicken nuggets, soda, fries, and the same sweet chili sauce used in the Olympic Village. Instead of selling just food, they sell fitness, relationships, and the Olympics.

McDonald is selling to athletes so that will attract everyday citizens to their restaurant. Athletes are popular so that will bring in lots of money if they are live on television.
They are also selling love to customers to bring in more money. Every meal with love makes desperate for love which means big business.

  22.   Savannah Says:

McDonalds is selling Olympians for there advertisement because they want people to come in and feel like there special. They would feel this way because they are eating with real professionals. They are selling to people who like the Olympics at this certain time. They are most certainly selling more than food because there is sauce, drinks and other things. So therefore they are selling more than food, and they are selling to certain people.
